We fully understand that many people are anxious about visiting the dentist. Since we don’t want fear to hold you back from getting the dental care you need, we offer sedation dentistry to improve your experience. Sedation dentistry allows you to relax while we perform a dental treatment. At the same time, you will remain conscious and aware of your surroundings. Instead of avoiding dental procedures, ask us about sedation dentistry.

Oral Conscious Sedation
With oral conscious sedation, your anxiety will decrease and you’ll feel comfortable during your dental treatment. Rest assured, you will stay conscious throughout the procedure. With this type of sedation, we provide medication that relaxes your body and mind. If you undergo this type of sedation procedure, we ask that you have someone else drive you on the day of your treatment. Nonetheless, the effects of the sedation do not linger, so you will feel alert and back to your normal state again soon after treatment.

Nitrous Oxide
We are proud to offer nitrous oxide– often referred to as laughing gas– as a sedation option. This type of sedation also helps you relax if you are nervous about a procedure or a regular visit to the dentist. For the most part, people can drive themselves after recovering from having nitrous oxide gas.

Sedation dentistry is separate from medication that you might receive for pain. While sedation dentistry will help you relax, you might also receive a local anesthetic or general anesthesia for certain dental procedures. If the idea of sedation or pain medication makes you nervous, please do not hesitate to express your concerns with your dentist.

Sedation Dentistry FAQs

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry helps patients relax during dental procedures by using medication to reduce anxiety. You remain conscious and aware of your surroundings, but you feel calm and at ease throughout the treatment.

What is oral conscious sedation?

Oral conscious sedation involves taking medication before your dental appointment to help you feel relaxed and comfortable. You stay awake during the procedure, but your anxiety is significantly reduced. Because the medication can affect coordination, you will need someone to drive you to and from the appointment.

How does nitrous oxide (laughing gas) work?

Nitrous oxide is a safe, fast-acting gas that helps patients relax during dental treatment. It is inhaled through a small mask and wears off quickly, allowing most people to drive themselves after their visit.

Is sedation dentistry the same as pain medication?

No. Sedation dentistry reduces anxiety and helps you stay calm, while pain medication or anesthetics numb specific areas or eliminate pain. In some cases, sedation and anesthetics may be used together.

Who is a good candidate for sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is ideal for patients with dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, difficulty sitting still, or those undergoing longer or more complex procedures. If you are nervous about treatment, discuss your concerns with your dentist to determine the best option.
